Abstract:
GIS polygon dataset for Mississippi of the USGS Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Data digitized from USGS 7.5 minute topo maps (paper) dated between 1960 and 1989. Data contains survey district, section, township, range number attributes , and annotation. *** Data was merged to form the statewide file in 2005 and corrected using new USGS  DRGS dated through 2004. +++ Further corrections were made by MS Department of Transportation staff 2007/2008. Note:  Attribute miscodings were found by Pete Kohn of the MS Development Authority and James Smith of the USDA/FSA - MS Office. Those corrections were made and incorporated into this version of the data set. Corrections to sections along the MS River in Washington and Issaquena Counties were made by MARIS staff in April 2010. These miscodes were found by Michael-Baker Engineering and Waggoner Engineering.
Purpose:
This data was collected for use in a right-of-way acquirement and statewide redistricting in 1990. MARIS staff merged the county data and edited this data with USGS DRG data through 2004.

Logical consistency report:
All line work is checked for topological integrity and to ensure that polygons are fully enclosed, no duplicate lines or points exists, line segments are composed of sequentially numbered coordinate pairs, intersecting lines are separated by a node, and no dangling lines exist. Topological checks and strucuturing are performed using the ArcInfo software. Data dictionary specification are automatically implemented via the ESRI Info database management software. Data collected from external data providers are randomly verified.

Process description:
USGS data by county were merged by MARIS staff to create a statewide file. The updated USGS DRGS were used to edit the county boundaries and state outline. If sections split county lines, they were merged to form a single polygon.

Description: This metadata is displayed using the FGDC Plus Stylesheet, which is an XSL template that can be used with ArcGIS software to display metadata. It displays metadata elements defined in the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) - aka FGDC Standard, the ESRI Profile of CSDGM, the Biological Data Profile of CSDGM, and the Shoreline Data Profile of CSDGM. CSDGM is the US Federal Metadata standard. The Federal Geographic Data Committee originally adopted the CSDGM in 1994 and revised it in 1998. According to Executive Order 12096 all Federal agencies are ordered to use this standard to document geospatial data created as of January, 1995. The standard is often referred to as the FGDC Metadata Standard and has been implemented beyond the federal level with State and local governments adopting the metadata standard as well. The Biological Data Profile broadens the application of the CSDGM so that it is more easily applied to biological data that are not explicitly geographic (laboratory results, field notes, specimen collections, research reports) but can be associated with a geographic location.
